Tom Weir and Studio City Sound in Focus
A Star-Studded Career
Studio City Sound’s influence and scope extends beyond traditional music production into film, digital media and broadcast television. The studio’s founder and owner, Tom Weir, has been in the business for over 30 years, having started out as a drummer himself. Tom trained with the legendary Joe Parcaro, who recorded with Frank Sinatra, Pink Floyd, The Monkees, and Madonna, to name a few.
Throughout his career, Tom has worked across a wide range of musical genres, including blues, rock, pop, and reggae. He has recorded, engineered, and mixed projects for an impressive roster of artists including Blondie, The Go-Go’s, Rod Stewart, Dave Stewart, and Michael Damian.
Tom won a Grammy for mixing Toots and the Maytals’ 2004 album True Love, and prior to that contributed to Michael Damien’s Billboard No. 1 hit “Rock On” in June of 1989.
At his studio, Tom recorded major session musicians including drummers Jim Keltner and Matt Laug, guitarist Tim Pierce, keyboardist and pianist Jeff Babko, bass and guitar player Lance Morrison, and bass player Paul Bushnell.
Among Tom’s many notable collaborations is his work as engineer and mixer for internationally acclaimed blues artist Mighty Mo Rodgers. Known for his powerful songwriting, soulful performances, and worldwide touring career, Mighty Mo has earned recognition as one of the most respected voices in contemporary blues. Tom’s engineering and mixing contributions helped bring Mighty Mo’ distinctive sound to audiences around the globe, further demonstrating his versatility and commitment to musical excellence.
Tom’s ability to work successfully across multiple genres has made Studio City Sound a destination for both established artists and emerging talent. And Tom has always had an eye for recognizing talent. He gave Josh Freese his first professional recording opportunity and was the early supporter of the violinist Luanne Homzy.
Making Music in the Era of New Technology
Always ahead of industry trends, Tom embraced online media and live-streaming technology long before it became common practice in the music industry. In 2010, Studio City Sound became one of the pioneers in broadcasting live performances, recording sessions, interviews, and special events to a global audience through the Studio City Sound YouTube channel.
Among the recent notable projects was the recording of both the audio and video for Ponpon Chen’s performance of “World News Polka,” produced at Studio City Sound, which aired on ABC’s Weekend News program. The national network broadcast highlighted the studio’s capabilities as a full-service production facility, combining professional audio recording, video production, and live-streaming expertise under one roof. Other videos featuring Ponpon Chen have become some of the channel’s most popular content, further expanding the studio’s reach and visibility.
The channel has become known for showcasing exceptional musical talent, behind-the-scenes studio productions, and innovative live-stream events. Today, the channel has generated more than 20 million views and attracted over 15,000 subscribers, creating a worldwide community of music fans, artists, and industry professionals. These achievements reflect Tom’s commitment to combining traditional recording excellence with modern digital media and content creation.
In addition to his success in the recording industry, Tom has contributed to numerous film and television productions as a producer, recording engineer, and mixer. Through Studio City Sound, Tom produced and mixed music featured in major motion pictures and streaming releases, including the Netflix films Falling for Christmas and Irish Wish, both starring Lindsay Lohan. His work has also been featured in holiday favorites such as Christmas Waltz and A Princess for Christmas. These projects showcase Tom’s versatility across genres and his ability to deliver world-class productions for both the music and entertainment industries.
From mixing the Grammy Award-winning True Love album by Toots and the Maytals, to contributing to Michael Damian’s Billboard No. 1 hit “Rock On,” to producing music for major motion pictures and building a digital audience of more than 20 million YouTube views, Tom Weir has established himself as a respected producer, mixer, engineer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Through Studio City Sound, he continues to provide artists with world-class recording, video production, live-streaming, and creative services from the studio’s expanded facility at 10707 Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood, California.
